RECAP: Boomers Drop Game One of Divisional Series

SCHAUMBURG, Ill.  — The 2013 Frontier League Champion Schaumburg Boomers, presented by Wintrust Community Banks, saw a 10-game home win streak come to an end in game one of the Frontier League Divisional series with a 9-5 loss to the Southern Illinois Miners.

Southern Illinois took the lead two batters into the contest and did not trail. The Miners scored single runs in the first, second, fourth, and sixth to build a 4-0 lead. Southern Illinois turned three double plays behind starter Matt Bywater, the 2014 Frontier League Pitcher of the Year. Bywater worked seven blank frames. The Miners added three runs in the seventh and two in the eighth to move ahead 9-0.

Schaumburg rallied in the contest, placing the tying run on deck in the ninth and forcing Southern Illinois to use their closer. The Boomers scored five runs in the eighth. Mark Nelson lifted a sacrifice fly and Gerard Hall connected on a grand slam in the inning. Schaumburg placed runners on base in every inning but could not break through. Joe De Pinto tallied three hits in the loss with Justin Vasquez and Tony Delmonico collecting two apiece. Bobby Martin took away a homer with a leaping grab in the sixth. Charle Rosario was saddled with the loss, allowing just two earned runs in 5.2 innings.

Schaumburg (61-35, 1-1) needs a pair of wins at Southern Illinois to keep the title defense alive. Southern Illinois leads the best-of-three series 1-0 and hosts game two on Wednesday night at 7:05 p.m. The contest can be heard live on AM 1410 WRMN with the Voice of the Boomers and 2013 Frontier League Broadcaster of the Year, Tim Calderwood.
