RECAP: Boomers Roll to Series Lead

SCHAUMBURG, Ill.  — The 2013 Frontier League Champion Schaumburg Boomers, presented by Wintrust Community Banks, cruised past the River City Rascals 11-2 on Tuesday night to pull within a victory of a second consecutive Frontier League title.

River City opened a 2-0 lead with single runs in the first two innings against Schaumburg starter Eddie Cody. The Boomers responded with five consecutive one-out hits in the bottom of the second to open a 5-2 lead and never look back. Michael Valadez drove home the first run and Bobby Martin evened the score. Alexi Colon poked a double to right, scoring Valadez with the go ahead run. Joe De Pinto added a sacrifice fly and Justin Vasquez an RBI single to cap the rally.

Schaumburg tacked on another run in the third to chase River City starter Tommy Mendoza. The Boomers broke the game open with four fifth inning runs thanks to a pair of two-run singles from De Pinto and Martin.

Cody tossed a complete game, the second of the playoffs for Schaumburg. The rookie struck out 10 and retired nine in a row from the fifth through the eighth. The Boomers registered 14 hits in the contest including nine from the bottom four hitters, who combined for nine runs and five RBIs. Jordan Dean collected three hits and scored three times.

The Boomers (61-35, 5-2) lead the best-of-five championship series 2-1 and will have a first attempt at winning a second consecutive championship at home on Wednesday night at 6:30 p.m. RHP Seth Webster (2-0, 0.56) starts for the Boomers against RHP Kyle Brady (1-0, 1.50). The game can be heard live on AM 1410 WRMN with the Voice of the Boomers and 2013 Frontier League Broadcaster of the Year, Tim Calderwood.
