Boomers Power Past ThunderBolts

CRESTWOOD, Ill.  — The two-time defending Frontier League Champion Schaumburg Boomers, presented by Wintrust Community Banks, halted a brief two-game skid by tallying a 4-2 win over the Windy City ThunderBolts in a day game on Wednesday.

Facing Windy City staff ace Travis Tingle for the second time in a week, the Boomers picked up a pair of runs in the first inning. Mike Schulze, who has posted a hit in each of the first six games this year, led off the game with a single and scored on a two-out double from Ryan Tuntland. Mark Nelson singled on the next pitch to hand the Boomers a 2-0 edge. The lead held behind rookie Scott Plaza, making his first professional start, until the seventh. Windy City received a two-run single from Ryan Deitrich to tie the score. Justin Vasquez singled home two in the top of the eighth to break the tie and account for the final.

Vasquez finished with three hits to anchor the offense. Plaza worked 6.1 innings and allowed just one run with no walks and three strikeouts in his first start following one relief outing. Hideyoshi Otake picked up the win in relief, working .2 innings to win for the first time in America. Brandon Bargas shut the door with two scoreless innings for his first save.

The Boomers (4-2) will conclude the season opening seven-game roadtrip with another day game on Thursday at 10:35 a.m. at Windy City. RHP Eddie Cody (1-0, 0.00) starts for the Boomers in the rubber match against LHP Jake Fisher (1-0, 0.00), the Frontier League Pitcher of the Week.
