Early Offense Pushes Normal Past Boomers

SCHAUMBURG, Ill.  — The two-time defending Frontier League Champion Schaumburg Boomers, presented by Wintrust Community Banks, could not overcome an early deficit in a 9-4 loss to the Normal CornBelters on Tuesday night.

Normal scored runs in each of the first three innings against Schaumburg starter Scott Plaza, opening a 6-0 edge. Plaza, an Arlington Heights, Ill. native worked 5.1 innings in the loss. Normal hit four homers in the game including solo shots in the eighth and ninth to pull away. The Boomers battled to within 7-4 by scoring three runs in the bottom of the sixth to chase Normal starter Chris CarmainJustin Vasquez logged a two-run triple in the frame.

Vasquez, Craig Massey, and Alexi Colon each finished with two hits in the loss. Jordan Dean has posted a hit in nine straight games while Massey has reached in every game this year. Evan Boyd twirled 1.2 blank innings out of the bullpen.

The Boomers (6-5) play the first home day game on Wednesday with an 11:00 a.m. start in the middle contest with Normal. RHP Eddie Cody (2-0, 0.69) starts for the Boomers against RHP Kevin Johnson (0-1, 8.22) in the early affair.
