Boomers Fall in Extras

SCHAUMBURG, Ill.  — The two-time defending Frontier League Champion Schaumburg Boomers, presented by Wintrust Community Banks, took part in just the second game in the league to feature the international tiebreaker, dropping a 5-1 decision to the Normal CornBelters in 11 innings.

The game headed to extras following nine innings of a pitcher’s duel. Eddie Cody matched Kevin Johnson inning by inning. Normal scored a single run with two outs in the sixth. Schaumburg was able to tie the game in the bottom of the seventh. Justin Vasquez coaxed a two out walk and scored on a triple from Tillman Pugh. Pugh posted two of the four Schaumburg hits. Cody worked seven innings, matching a career best with eight strikeouts.

The Boomers nearly won the game in the 10th but a Michael Valadez double skipped over the wall for an automatic two-bagger, stranding the winning run at third. The international rule automatically places a runner at second to start the 11th inning. Normal took advantage, scoring four runs to secure the win. The CornBelters have been victorious in both games to feature the international rule this season, a new rule instituted for 2015.
