Boomers Bring Back McQuail, Add Bolt & Qualls
SCHAUMBURG, Ill. — The two-time defending Frontier League Champion Schaumburg Boomers, presented by Wintrust Community Banks, announced today the acquisitions of infielder Steve McQuail, pitcher Garrett Bolt, and catcher Tyler Qualls. All three immediately join the Schaumburg Boomers active roster.
McQuail, 25, rejoins the Boomers after spending his entire 2014 season playing in MLB organizations, including two games for the Reno Aces of the Triple-A Pacific Coast League. A crucial piece to the Boomers 2013 Frontier League title, McQuail finished in a tie for fourth overall in the Frontier League with 20 home runs on the season despite playing in just 69 games primarily as a designated hitter and first baseman with Schaumburg. The Boomers slugger belted a home run every 3.45 games or one every 13.15 at-bats. He will wear his familiar no. 48 for the Boomers.
A 30th round selection in the 2010 MLB Amateur Draft by the Toronto Blue Jays, the 6’2” 240 lbs. slugger returns to the Schaumburg Boomers organization after 32 games this season for the Arizona Diamondbacks affiliate Kane County Cougars and Visalia Rawhide.
Bolt, 25, joins the Boomers via a free agent signing out of the Mount Rainier Professional Baseball League. Bolt also becomes the sixth player signed by the Boomers out of the California Winter League, the official development league of the Frontier League. A 23rd round draft choice by the Los Angeles Dodgers, the 6’4” 215 lbs. Bolt appeared in both the Arizona and Pioneer Leagues after a successful stint pitching for Western Illinois University.
Qualls, 23, comes to Schaumburg after spending the spring with the River City Rascals. The Jackson, MO native spent 2014 as the backstop for Louisiana Tech, starting 40 of 46 games for the Bulldogs while posting a .248 average. During the 2014 campaign he also caught 36 runners trying to steal and was on the watch list for the Johnny Bench Award, an accolade given annually to the top catcher in college baseball. He will wear no. 24 for the Boomers.
In a set of corresponding moves, the Boomers announced the release of first baseman Ryan Tuntland and catcher Chris Matthews. The team also placed pitcher Clark Labitan on the 7-day disabled list retroactive to May 29.
