Florence Sneaks Past Boomers in Series Opener

SCHAUMBURG, Ill.  — The two-time defending Frontier League Champion Schaumburg Boomers, presented by Wintrust Community Banks, kicked off the final series before the All-Star break by dropping a 3-2 decision to the Florence Freedom on Friday night.

The contest featured both starting pitchers tossing zeroes until the fifth when Florence struck for two runs with two outs on three straight hits against Schaumburg starter Edwin Carl. Carl allowed just two runs while striking out seven in six innings. The Boomers were able to tie the game with a two-out two-run single from TJ Bennett in the sixth. Bennett finished with two hits in the contest. Florence plated the winning run in the top of the eighth.

Schaumburg (22-27) will continue the final series of the first half with the second contest against the Freedom on Saturday night with another fireworks display. LHP Peter Gehle (2-1, 4.20) starts for the Boomers in the 6:00 p.m. contest with LHP Ryan Davis (0-1, 4.50) on the hill for Florence.
