Boomers Trade for Ty Nelson, Sign Two

SCHAUMBURG, Ill.  — The two-time defending Frontier League Champion Schaumburg Boomers, presented by Wintrust Community Banks, announce the acquisition of outfielder Ty Nelson for a Player To Be Named Later (PTBNL) from the Lake Erie Crushers. Additionally, prior to this weekend’s road series against the Crushers, the team signed pitchers Alan Oaks and Bo Logan to contracts.

Nelson, 26, originally signed with the Boomers on May 7, 2012 and played with the Boomers through the 2014 season before joining Lake Erie for their 2015 campaign. In three seasons with Schaumburg from 2012 to 2014, Nelson recorded 124 hits in 147 games along with a career high .305 batting average and 39 RBI.

Nelson arrived in Schaumburg as a rookie following a pair of solid seasons at the University of Tennessee-Martin. Nelson batted .345 as a junior in 2009. Nelson improved for his senior campaign, ranking among the national leaders with a .395 batting average, earning Second Team All-Conference honors in the Ohio Valley Conference. Nelson led the team in average while also posting 20 doubles, four triples, and 19 stolen bases to go with eight homers and 45 RBI.

Oaks, 27, joins the Boomers after compiling a 2-1 record for the Southern Illinois Miners earlier in the 2015 campaign. A product of the University of Michigan, the 6'3 225 pound right-hander owns the Normal CornBelters team record with 24 saves in 62 appearances over two seasons.

A 2014 Frontier League All-Star, Oaks was also an eighth round draft selection of the Florida Marlins organization in the 2010 MLB Amateur Draft, reaching as high as the Double-A Jacksonville Suns.

Logan, 23, made his professional debut with the Winnipeg Goldeyes of the American Association earlier this year. The 5'10" 190 pound left-hander registered five saves in 24 appearances for the Owls, posting a 3-1 record in his senior season and a 16-6 record overall.

In a set of corresponding moves, the Boomers released pitchers Scotty WardBrett MausKamikani Usui, and Brandon Bargas. Prior to his appearance in the 2015 Frontier League All-Star Game, the Boomers activated pitcher Eddie Cody from the 7-day injured reserve. The Boomers roster now stands at 23.

The Boomers (22-29) return to Boomers Stadium July 24 for a six game homestand against the Rockford Aviators and Joliet Slammers. Ensure your place in the fun by calling (847) 461-3695 (FOWL). All games can again be heard on AM 1410 WRMN with the voice of the Boomers, Tim Calderwood. Broadcasts begin with a 15-minute online only highlight show followed by a 15-minute pre-game radio show.
