Boomers Fall in Second Half Opener

AVON, Ohio  — The two-time defending Frontier League Champion Schaumburg Boomers, presented by Wintrust Community Banks, opened the second half of the season with a 5-2 loss on the road at the hands of the Lake Erie Crushers.

Schaumburg held a 2-0 lead in the contest, breaking an egg feast behind a pair of solid pitching performances in the fifth. TJ Bennett led off the frame with a double, was sacrificed to second, and crossed the plate on a double from Kyle Ruchim against his former Northwestern teammate, Lake Erie starter Zach Morton. Mike Schulze singled home Ruchim. Lake Erie chipped away against Raul Jacobson, scoring single runs in the fifth and sixth to tie the score. Jacobson had a 13.2 inning scoreless streak broken in the fifth. The Crushers won the game with three runs in the eighth.

Jacobson allowed just one earned run in 5.1 innings while walking one and matching a career best with six strikeouts. The scoreless streak was the longest of the season. Clark Labitan suffered the loss in relief. Eight different individuals posted hits for the Boomers.

The Boomers are (22-30) continue the series on Saturday night at 6:05 p.m. RHP Edwin Carl (1-4, 4.22) is slated to make his second half debut against LHP Brad Zambron (1-3, 3.94).
