Boomers Take Road Series

SAUGET, Ill.  — The two-time defending Frontier League Champion Schaumburg Boomers, scored a series win on the road by dispatching the Gateway Grizzlies 5-2 on Sunday night.

Schaumburg had plenty of opportunities to take control early in the affair. The Boomers left nine on base in the opening four innings but opened a 3-0 lead with a run in the third and two in the fourth. Willi Martin drove home Alexi Colon with a sacrifice fly in the third while Colon notched an RBI single in the fourth and Ty Nelson collected a fielder’s choice to score a run. Kyle Ruchim extended his hitting streak to 16 games with a two-out two-run double in the eighth to provide some insurance after Gateway scored twice in the seventh.

The early lead was more than enough for Brett Mabry. Mabry faced the minimum through the first three innings and allowed just two runs on five hits in 6.2 innings of work with five strikeouts. Clark Labitan and Dexter Price combined on the win with Price picking up his first save since May 14 after missing nearly 50 games. TJ Bennett led a nine-hit attack with three and two runs scored as Bennett and Mabry exacted revenge on their former team.

The Boomers (28-38) return home to begin a lengthy nine-game homestand on Tuesday night against the Southern Illinois Miners. RHP Raul Jacobson (1-2, 3.14) is scheduled to start for Schaumburg against LHP Matt Bywater (8-3, 2.30), the 2014 Frontier League Pitcher of the Year. The Boomers are home for virtually the entire month of August. Ensure your place in the fun at Boomers Stadium before it is too late this summer by calling (847) 461-FOWL (3695).
