Boomers Thurber Named Frontier League Pitcher of the Week

SCHAUMBURG, IL – Schaumburg Boomers starting pitcher Taylor Thurber has been named the Frontier League Pitcher of the Week, as chosen by Pointstreak, the official statistical provider of the Frontier League and the Independent Professional Baseball Federation.

Thurber, also the newest Boomer on the roster, was signed on July 24 after a stellar collegiate career at Appalachian State in the Sun Belt Conference.

Pitching in just his second professional appearance, Thurber dazzled the home crowd at Boomers Stadium and dominated the Joliet Slammers in a complete game shutout and 7-0 Boomers victory. The right-hander was stellar all night, facing only five over the minimum while giving up just four hits and striking out four without walking a single batter.

The performance brought his record to 1-1 on the season with a 3.60 ERA. In his 15 innings of work, he has struck out eight without walking a batter.

Originally from Mooresville, NC, Thurber starred at Appalachian State, recording a 3.03 ERA and 151 strikeouts to only 26 walks over 196 innings pitched. Over his career, Thurber led his conference in fewest BB/9, K/BB, WHIP, and CG.

Thurber's victory was the 200th career managerial regular season win (all in the Frontier League) for Schaumburg Boomers manager Jamie Bennett. Thurber will receive his award August 4 prior to that night’s game against the Southern Illinois Miners.

The Boomers (28-38) return to Boomers stadium for the first of nine straight home tilts tonight at 6:30 p.m. against the Southern Illinois Miners. Ensure your place in the fun at Boomers Stadium this summer by calling (847) 461-3695 or hear all of the action on AM 1410 WRMN with the voice of the Boomers, Tim Calderwood.

The Frontier League is entering its 23rd season in 2015 and features 14 teams stretching from Pennsylvania to Missouri and from Kentucky to northern Michigan. The Frontier League annually advances the most players to MLB organizations of any of the independent leagues, and 27 former Frontier League players have played in the Major Leagues.
