Boomers Pitch Past Miners

SCHAUMBURG, Ill.  — The two-time defending Frontier League Champion Schaumburg Boomers, presented by Wintrust Community Banks, opened a nine-game homestand with a 6-1 victory over the Southern Illinois Miners.

Facing the 2014 Frontier League Pitcher of the Year, Raul Jacobson outdueled Matt Bywater. Jacobson tossed a career high 7.2 innings and allowed just a single run on five hits while striking out six. With the game even a 1-1 in the bottom of the fifth, Ty Nelson rocketed a three-run double into the right field corner to hand the Boomers a 4-1 lead. Willi Martin added an RBI single as the Boomers plated four runs to chase Bywater from the game.

Kyle Ruchim and Martin each finished with three hits in the contest. Ruchim logged three doubles to extend his hitting streak to 17 games, matching the second longest streak in team history. Mike Schulze logged a single and has reached base in 31 consecutive contests at home.

The Boomers (29-38) continue the homestand with game two of the series on Wednesday night at 6:30 p.m. RHP Taylor Thurber (1-1, 3.60), the Frontier League Pitcher of the Week, takes the hill opposite RHP Adam Lopez (9-0, 1.89).
