Miners Upend Boomers

SCHAUMBURG, Ill.  — The two-time defending Frontier League Champion Schaumburg Boomers, presented by Wintrust Community Banks, dropped the rubber contest of a three-game home series to the Southern Illinois Miners by a 4-2 count on Thursday night.

Michael Earley hit a two-run homer with two outs in the top of the first off Schaumburg starter Eddie Cody to hand the Miners an early 2-0 lead. Cody worked six innings and struck out seven but suffered the loss. The Boomers had chances in every inning but stranded 12 men on base in the loss. Southern Illinois led 3-0 before Schaumburg scored twice in the bottom of the eighth. Robby Spencer collected an RBI double for his first professional hit and Craig Massey knocked home a run with a single. Alexi Colon tallied two hits and reached base four times.

The Boomers (29-40) welcome the Washington Wild Things on Friday night for a 6:30 p.m. contest featuring postgame fireworks on Star Wars Night. LHP Peter Gehle (2-4, 5.65) is slated to start for Schaumburg against RHP Luke Wilkins (5-3, 3.19). The Boomers are home for virtually the entire month of August.
