Windy City See-Saws Past Boomers

SCHAUMBURG, Ill.  — The two-time defending Frontier League Champion Schaumburg Boomers, presented by Wintrust Community Banks, continued a nine-game homestand with an 8-5 loss at the hands of the Windy City ThunderBolts in the opener of a series on Tuesday night.

Schaumburg was unable to hold a pair of leads in the game. Alexi Colon lifted a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the third to put the Boomers ahead 1-0. Windy City responded with two in the top of the fourth to open a 2-1 lead and added another in the fifth. Schaumburg tallied two runs in the bottom of the fifth and sixth to grab a 5-3 edge. Ty Nelson posted an RBI triple in the fifth with Colon adding a two-run single in the sixth. The ThunderBolts quickly put three on the board in the seventh to grab the lead and capture the win.

Taylor Thurber worked six innings on the mound, allowing three runs and leaving with the lead. Thurber struck out a career best six. Evan Boyd (0-3) suffered the loss in relief. Nelson and Michael Valadez each tallied a pair of hits as the Boomers finished with 10 but stranded 12 on the basepaths. Colon collected three RBIs. Mike Schulze singled in the third and has reached base in 37 consecutive home contests.

The Boomers (30-43) have a matinee on Wednesday with a 1:00 p.m. affair. RHP Eddie Cody (7-3, 3.10) takes the ball against LHP Austin Wright (4-8, 4.40).
