Windy City Rallies Past Boomers

SCHAUMBURG, Ill.  — The two-time defending Frontier League Champion Schaumburg Boomers, presented by Wintrust Community Banks, could not hold a 4-0 lead in suffering a 10-8 loss in the series finale to the Windy City ThunderBolts.

The Boomers opened a 4-0 lead by scoring four times with two outs in the bottom of the second. Kenny Kirshner singled home Michael Valadez with the third straight single of the inning. Alexi Colon coaxed a walk to force in a run and Ty Nelson made it 4-0 with a two-run single. Windy City hit a pair of homers in the third to battle within 4-3. The visitors tied the game in the fifth and took the lead with four in the sixth. Trailing 10-4, Schaumburg plated four runs in the seventh to pull within 10-8 but could get no closer. Spencer Mahoney picked up a two-run single in the inning and TJ Bennett tallied a two-run triple.

Schaumburg finished with 11 hits in the game and put the tying runs on base in the eighth and ninth but could not break through. Kirshner, Kyle Ruchim, and Nelson all recorded two hits. Starter Peter Gehle took the loss, allowing seven runs in five innings.

The Boomers (31-44) head on the road for a brief three-game stint against the Evansville Otters on Friday night at 6:35 p.m. RHP Brett Mabry (4-3, 3.70) takes the ball in the series opener against RHP Trevor Walch (8-5, 1.47).
