Florence Drops Boomers in Series Opener

SCHAUMBURG, Ill.  — The two-time defending Frontier League Champion Schaumburg Boomers, presented by Wintrust Community Banks, dropped the opener of a three-game weekend series with the Florence Freedom by a 7-3 final on Friday night before another crowd of over 5,000.

Florence scored four unearned runs in the top of the first to take the lead and stretched the advantage to 7-0 with two in the fourth and one in the fifth. Kyle Ruchim doubled home a run in the fifth to plate the first Schaumburg run. Ruchim added an RBI single in the sixth and finished with three hits in the contest. The Boomers drew seven walks in the contest along with seven hits and two hit by pitches. Eddie Cody suffered the loss, working five innings. Kagen Hopkins and Hideyoshi Otake each threw two scoreless frames.

The Boomers (34-48) continues the series on Saturday night with a 6:00 p.m. affair featuring postgame fireworks on the return of Field of Screams. RHP Taylor Thurber (1-3, 4.91) takes the ball for the Boomers opposite RHP Coleman Stephens. Schaumburg plays at home for virtually the entire month of August.
