First Inning Powers Florence

SCHAUMBURG, Ill.  — The two-time defending Frontier League Champion Schaumburg Boomers, presented by Wintrust Community Banks, could not overcome a rough start in a 7-3 loss to the Florence Freedom before another crowd of over 5,000 on Saturday night at Boomers Stadium.

For the second consecutive night, Florence plated four runs in the top of the first. The Freedom stretched the edge to 6-0 with two more in the second against Schaumburg starter Taylor Thurber. John Menken became the first Boomer to reach base in the fifth inning with a single. Robby Spencer broke up the shutout with a double to center. Schaumburg scored twice and brought the tying run to the plate in the sixth, but Florence escaped. Alexi Colon and Spencer drove home runs in the frame. Spencer, Menken, and Colon each finished with two hits. Clark Labitan and Dexter Price finished off the game with three scoreless frames combined.

The Boomers (34-49) conclude the homestand on Sunday afternoon at 1:00 p.m. RHP Evan Boyd (0-4, 5.35) makes his second spot start against RHP Jeremy Gooding (5-4, 3.18).
