Boomers Win Third Straight at Home

SCHAUMBURG, Ill.  — The two-time defending Frontier League Champion Schaumburg Boomers, presented by Wintrust Community Banks, plated four runs with two outs in the bottom of the eighth to rally past the Washington Wild Things 5-2 on Wednesday afternoon.

Starter Kagen Hopkins retired the first 13 batters to come to the plate in his first start with the Boomers. Kyle Ruchim handed Schaumburg a 1-0 lead with a solo homer in the fourth. Washington tied the game in the fifth and held a brief 2-1 lead in the eighth prior to the outburst. Kenny Kirshner doubled home a pair to hand the Boomers the lead. Willi Martin and Jared Welch also collected run-scoring singles during the frame.

Hopkins worked 5.2 innings and allowed just one run while striking out three. Jake Joyce notched the win in relief while Dexter Price tallied his seventh save of the year by working the ninth. Kirshner paced a nine-hit offensive attack with a pair of hits along with a run and a stolen base. Ryan Brockett reached base three times while Ruchim scored twice.

The Boomers (39-53) conclude the home portion of the season with a record 54th contest at home on Thursday night at 6:30 p.m. RHP Taylor Thurber (1-4, 5.32) takes the ball for the finale against RHP Ernesto Zaragoza (6-7, 4.19).
