Hopkins Tabbed as Pitcher of the Week

SCHAUMBURG, Ill. — The Schaumburg Boomers, presented by Wintrust Community Banks, are pleased to announce that pitcher Kagen Hopkins has been selected as the Frontier League’s Pitcher of the Week.

Hopkins made a pair of starts last week. The right-hander threw 6.2 innings on Tuesday at home against Lake Erie, allowing just one run on five hits while striking out a career best seven. Hopkins came back on Sunday in the homestand finale against Washington and tossed seven shutout innings, allowing just two hits while bettering the previous career high mark with eight strikeouts. For the week, the Vacaville, Calif. Native threw 13.2 innings and allowed just one run while striking out 15 and sporting an ERA of 0.65.

“Kagen has done an outstanding job for us this year,” Manager Jamie Bennett said. “Since stepping into the rotation he has really flourished and helped our ball club tremendously.”

Hopkins entered the rotation on June 3 and has made five starts for the team, allowing a total of four earned runs in 30.2 innings for an ERA of 1.17 with a 2-0 record. The pitcher is in his second season with the team. Hopkins was acquired in a trade with the Gary SouthShore RailCats prior to the 2015 campaign but was released in spring training and brought back late in the year, pitching four times with one start.

Hopkins becomes the third Schaumburg pitcher to be honored by the league since the awards were first given out in 2014. Hopkins is the fifth player overall and the first since Taylor Thurber was named as Pitcher of the Week on August 3, 2015.
