Three Boomers Named All Stars

SCHAUMBURG, Ill. — The Schaumburg Boomers, presented by Wintrust Community Banks, will have three participants in the 2016 Frontier League All-Star Game, hosted by the Florence Freedom on July 13.

For the first time since 2013, the Boomers will have multiple starters as Mark Nelson and Paul Kronenfeld were both voted in as starters. Nelson will start in the outfield with Kronenfeld serving as the designated hitter. Starting pitcher Kagen Hopkins was also voted onto the team.

Nelson is in his third season with the team and has played both corner outfield slots along with third base this season. The left-handed hitter was signed away from the Boomers by the Giants after just eight games in 2015. Nelson is batting .289 this year, highest among regulars. The Florida Atlantic product owns a homer along with seven doubles and 15 RBIs. Nelson sported a 13-game hitting streak earlier this season.

Kronenfeld leads the team in homers with seven, and RBIs with 26. The left-handed hitter is batting .262 this year and has notched a 12-game hitting streak. Kronenfeld joined the team following a stint in the Reds organization and has seen action on the field at first and in the corner outfield slots while also serving as the designated hitter.

Hopkins is in his second season with the team. After being released in spring training, Hopkins returned late in 2015 and made four appearances with one start in his final outing of the year. The California native opened 2016 in the bullpen before moving to the rotation where he has become one of the most dominant pitchers in the league. Hopkins has allowed just four earned runs in six starts and is currently riding a franchise record stretch with 20 consecutive scoreless innings. The right-hander has an overall mark of 3-1 with a 1.90 ERA in 10 outings, but owns an ERA under 1.00 as a starter. The current 1.90 ERA ranks second in the league.

Schaumburg hosted the All-Star Game last season but did not have a starter. The Boomers are currently 22-24 nearing the halfway point of the season and open a three-game series at home with Traverse City tonight.
