Boomers Fall Short in Finale at River City

O’FALLON, Mo. — The Schaumburg Boomers, presented by Wintrust Community Banks, scored four runs in the top of the ninth inning but fell just short in a comeback attempt, dropping the final game with the River City Rascals by a 7-6 final.

River City used a pair of big innings to build a 7-0 lead, scoring four times in the fourth against All-Star Kagen Hopkins and adding three in the seventh. Schaumburg tallied a pair of runs in the eighth and brought the tying run to the plate in the ninth but could not overcome the deficit. All-Star Paul Kronenfeld nailed a three-run homer with two outs in the ninth, his ninth of the year, and added three hits to go with four RBIs. Zack Weigel drove home another run with a sacrifice fly earlier in the inning.

Hopkins worked five innings and allowed four runs on seven hits while matching a career high with eight strikeouts. The offense slugged 12 hits, eight over the final two frames. Mark Nelson, Chris Robinson, and Dusty Robinson all notched a pair.

The Boomers (25-30) are off on Monday before opening a three-game series at Normal on Tuesday night. LHP Gunnar Kines (3-3, 3.49) starts for Schaumburg in the 6:35 p.m. contest. Schaumburg returns home on July 22 for a busy and fun-filled three-game weekend series.
