Boomers Split Doubleheader at Normal

NORMAL, Ill. — The Schaumburg Boomers, presented by Wintrust Community Banks, played a non-scheduled doubleheader for the first time this season, tallying a split with the Normal CornBelters after dropping the opener 5-3 but rebounding for a 2-1 victory in the nightcap.

The Boomers opened a 2-0 lead in the second inning of the opener. Jack Cockrum drew a walk in his first professional at bat with two outs and was along for the ride on the first professional homer from Nick Oberg. Normal responded with four runs in the bottom of the inning and did not trail the remainder of the contest. Griff Gordon brought the Boomers within 4-3 with an RBI single in the fourth, his first RBI with the team.

Zack Weigel broke open a scoreless contest in the nightcap with a two-run triple in the top of the fifth inning to account for the only runs of game two. Weigel reached base three times and stole a base in the second game. Seth Webster twirled six innings to become the franchise’s career leader in wins, allowing just a single run in the sixth while scattering four hits. Dexter Price shut the door for his seventh save. Mark Nelson logged multiple hits in each contest.

The Boomers (26-31) finish the series on Thursday night with RHP Scott Schultz (4-2, 5.23) on the hill before returning home on July 22 for a busy and fun-filled three-game weekend series.
