Gateway Walks Off in Nail-Biter

SAUGET, Ill. — The Schaumburg Boomers, presented by Wintrust Community Banks, dropped a close contest to the Gateway Grizzlies by a 5-4 score on a walk-off single in the bottom of the ninth.

Schaumburg opened the scoring in the first with an RBI single off the bat of Paul Kronenfeld. Gateway plated a pair of runs in the bottom of the frame on a two-run homer against starter Scott Schultz. The Boomers plated two runs in the fifth to open a 3-2 lead on a single from Mikal Hill, who tied the game on Tuesday, and a sacrifice fly from James Keller. Hill extended the lead to 4-2 with an RBI in the ninth before Gateway was able to post three runs on four hits and two walks to steal the victory.

Schultz spun a quality start, working six innings and allowing just two runs on four hits with a walk and six strikeouts. Jake Joyce bridged the gap with two scoreless innings, striking out four. Dexter Price suffered the loss. Schaumburg tallied 10 hits in the game with three from Kronenfeld and two from Keller. The Boomers stranded 13 runners on base.

The Boomers (28-35) conclude the series on Thursday night at 7:05 p.m. by playing in a seventh straight rubber game. All-Star RHP Kage Hopkins (3-3, 2.52) starts for the Boomers against RHP Adam Eggnatz (4-2, 2.89).
