Back and Forth Game Ends in Boomers Victory

SCHAUMBURG, Ill. — The Schaumburg Boomers, presented by Wintrust Community Banks, came back early and then late to take game one of the weekend series, 7-5 against Southern Illinois.

The Miners jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first but the Boomers answered immediately in the bottom of the frame. Kenny Towns started the scoring for Schaumburg with an RBI single. Mikal Hill followed with a two-run single to but the Boomers up 3-2. The Boomers added a run in the fourth on an RBI double from Nick Oberg. Southern Illinois got to the Schaumburg bullpen in the eighth, plating two runs to knot the game at 4-4.

The Boomers answered the bell again as newcomer Argenis Aldazoro bunted in a run to make it 5-4. Schaumburg tacked on two more runs on a throwing error and an RBI single from Oberg. The Minors threatened in the ninth but managed only run for the final of 7-5.

Gunnar Kines threw seven innings, striking out six and allowing two runs but only one of the earned. Kines did not factor in the decision. Derek DeYoung got the win and Dexter Price earned his ninth save of the season. Towns hit in the first extended his hitting streak to six games. Paul Kronenfeld reached base for the seventh consecutive game.

The Boomers look to win their first series in eight attempts Saturday night at six p.m. with Brett Mabry (1-2, 5.31) on the hill.
