Boomers Shut Down Gateway

SCHAUMBURG, Ill. — Gunnar Kines tossed 7.2 shutout innings and Nick Oberg drove home both runs as the Schaumburg Boomers, presented by Wintrust Community Banks, recorded their first nine inning shutout of the season, blanking the Gateway Grizzlies 2-0 in the opener of a weekend home series.

Kines set the tone early in the game, retiring the side in order in the top of the first. Gateway’s Vincent Molesky, the league’s leader in strikeouts, matched Kines but allowed single runs in the second and seventh. The Boomers loaded the bases in the second on singles from Mark Nelson and James Keller along with a walk from Matt Petrone. The first run scored on a groundout from Oberg. Kines retired 10 straight at one point while Molesky notched nine consecutive outs. Oberg lifted a sacrifice fly to plate Petrone in the seventh with an additional run.

Kines struck out a career high nine while allowing just three hits in 7.2 innings. Jake Joyce recorded a strikeout to close the eighth and Dexter Price pitched a perfect ninth to tally his 10th save of the season. The pitching staff struck out 11 in the win.

The Boomers (32-39) continue the series on Saturday night at 6:00 p.m. with more fun planned including fireworks and a visit from the ZOOperstars. RHP Brett Mabry (1-2, 4.03) starts for Schaumburg while Gateway counters with LHP Jon Jones (3-2, 2.96).
