Boomers Comeback Late to Win

SCHAUMBURG, Ill. — It wasn’t pretty, but The Schaumburg Boomers, presented by Wintrust Community Banks, grinded through 10 innings to defeat the Gateway Grizzlies 4-3.

Gateway jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning and added another in the third to make it 2-0. The Boomers had base runners in each of the first five innings but could not push a run across. Schaumburg finally broke through in the sixth on a James Keller solo home run. The Grizzlies answered in the top of the seventh with a sacrifice fly to make it 3-1. In the bottom of the frame, Kenny Towns stole second and scored on a throwing error to cut the deficit in half.

Schaumburg put together a two out rally in the ninth to send it to extras. With runners on the corners, Nick Oberg hit what appeared to be a game winning double down the right field line but the ball skipped out of play and the winning run returned to third. Mark Nelson played hero in the bottom of the 10th with a two-out, bases-loaded, infield single to give the Boomer a 4-3 win.

Seth Webster did not factor in the decision but spun six and a third innings, allowing three hits, only one earned, and striking out four. Jake Joyce and Dexter Price combined for three and two thirds scoreless innings with Price earning the victory.

Schaumburg plays one game at Joliet on Tuesday before retuning home for two games against the Slammers Wednesday and Thursday.
