Middle Innings Cost Boomers at Joliet

JOLIET, Ill. —The Schaumburg Boomers, presented by Wintrust Community Banks, allowed the Joliet Slammers to score nine unanswered runs in the middle three innings to tally a 10-2 win in the opener of a three-game series on Tuesday night.

Newcomer Mike McClellan handed Schaumburg a 2-0 lead in the top of the fourth inning with a two-run homer. Joliet quickly tied the game in the bottom of the frame, tacked on two in the fifth, and broke the game open with five runs in the sixth. The Boomers had runners on base in seven different innings but could not drive home another run.

Scott Schultz suffered the loss, working 5.1 innings while striking out five. The pitching staff tallied 10 strikeouts as Ken Knudsen fanned two and Kurt Lipscomb three. McClellan paced an eight-hit attack by notching a pair, including a double. Kenny Towns also finished with two hits in the defeat.

The series will shift to Schaumburg on Wednesday afternoon at 1:00 p.m. with the Boomers (33-41) sending RHP Josh Heddinger (2-3, 4.75) to the hill.
