Strong Pitching Leads Boomers to Victory

SCHAUMBURG, Ill. — Kagen Hopkins threw a gem in his first start in two weeks as the Schaumburg Boomers, presented by Wintrust Community Banks, defeated the Joliet Slammers 2-1 Wednesday afternoon.

The Boomers broke the 0-0 tie in the third when Mark Nelson belted a solo home run to right. Joliet scored a run in the fifth on an RBI double to make it 1-1. Mike McClellan put the Boomers up for good in the seventh on an RBI double.

Hopkins tossed seven innings, allowing one run on three hits and striking out six. Evan Boyd threw a scoreless eighth and Dexter Price hurled a scoreless ninth for his eleventh save on the year.

Kenny Towns extended his hitting streak to 12 games as the Boomers won their first game against Joliet since May 25. Schaumburg tries to make it two in a row Thursday night with Gunnar Kines (4-4, 3.39) getting the start.
