Boomers Denied Late

WASHINGTON, PA —The Schaumburg Boomers, presented by Wintrust Community Banks, loaded the bases in the top of the ninth inning but could not push across the tying run in a 2-1 loss to the Washington Wild Things on Saturday night.

The hosts grabbed a 1-0 edge in the first inning on a solo homer from Ricky Rodriguez, bringing to an end a 23-inning scoreless streak for the Schaumburg pitching staff. Mike McClellan was able to even the game with an RBI single in the fourth to drive home Argenis Aldazoro. Another homer accounted for the difference as Chris Grayson took Seth Webster deep in the fifth. Devon Davis struck out consecutive hitters with the bases loaded in the ninth to preserve the win for Washington.

Webster suffered the loss despite allowing just two runs in five innings, striking out four. The bullpen combined to strike out eight in three innings as Jake Joyce fanned five of the six batters he faced including striking out the side in the seventh. Dexter Price struck out the side in the eighth. Aldazoro finished with three hits for the Boomers, who managed six and left nine on base. Kenny Towns has reached base in 15 consecutive contests.

The series concludes on Sunday in a 4:05 p.m. game with RHP Scott Schultz (4-5, 5.18) pitching for the Boomers against RHP Matt Fraudin (6-6, 3.03).
