Boomers Drop Slugfest

SCHAUMBURG, Ill. — Every starter recorded a hit for The Schaumburg Boomers, presented by Wintrust Community Banks, Tuesday night but they were unable to keep the Lake Erie bats in check as the Boomers dropped the opener 9-8.

The Boomers jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first on a Kenny Towns sacrifice fly. Lake Erie responded with a four-run second. Schaumburg scored one in the bottom of the frame to make it 4-2. The Crushers scored two in the fourth and one in the fifth to extend their lead to 7-2.

The Boomers weren’t done though. Tobias Moreno scored on a fielding error by Lake Erie before Mike McClellan drew a bases loaded walk to pull Schaumburg within three. Mikal Hill plated a run on a fielder’s choice to the second baseman. James Keller got in on the action with a sharp single to left and Jordan Dean made it 7-7 with a two-out single to right. The Boomers’ bullpen failed to hold the lead in the sixth, allowing two runs. Hill made it a 9-8 game with a bases-loaded walk in the eighth but Schaumburg was unable to complete the comeback in the ninth.

Kagen Hopkins threw five innings allowing seven runs and striking out three. Towns extended his on-base streak to 17 games with a single in the five-run fifth.

The Boomers send lefty Gunnar Kines (4-4, 3.14) to the mound Wednesday to square off against (Juan Caballero, 2-1, 3.79).
