Boomers Edged in Home Opener

SCHAUMBURG, Ill. — The Schaumburg Boomers, presented by Wintrust Community Banks, opened the home portion of the season with a 2-1 defeat at the hands of the Windy City ThunderBolts.

Schaumburg managed just a single hit in the contest against Windy City starter Brady Muller, but made the most of a double from Dusty Robinson in the second inning. Robinson led off with a double, moved to third on a grounder from Paul Kronenfeld and scored on a grounder from Josh Gardiner, signed before the contest. The lead held for starter Scott Schultz until two runs scored in the seventh. Schultz retired 11 straight while Muller sat down 14 in a row. A pair of errors opened the door for the visitors to tie the game before a Kevin Barker double put Windy City ahead. Muller finished out a complete game, allowing just three baserunners.

Schultz did not allow an earned run in 6.2 innings, surrendering four hits while striking out five. The Schaumburg staff struck out 10 as Patrick Dolan fanned four in 1.1 innings of relief and Derek DeYoung added a strikeout in the ninth. The single hit marked a franchise low in the fifth consecutive defeat.

The home portion of the season continues on Saturday night at Boomers Stadium with fireworks postgame and an appearance from the Jesse White Tumblers.
