Boomers Win Series at Joliet in Extras

JOLIET, Ill. — The Schaumburg Boomers, presented by Wintrust Community Banks, failed to hold a four-run ninth inning lead but logged a 9-6 extra-inning victory over the Joliet Slammers to win the series.

Playing for the third time in 24 hours, the Boomers opened a 4-1 lead with three runs in the sixth. Mark Nelson singled home the go-ahead run and Paul Kronenfeld, who homered earlier in the contest, singled home a pair. Chris Robinson keyed a two-run top of the ninth with a solo homer as the Boomers led 6-2. Joliet’s Charlie White hit a game-tying grand slam with two outs in the bottom half to send the game to extras. Ino Patron boasted a three-run double in the 10th to help Schaumburg score the decision.

Scott Schultz worked seven quality innings, allowing just two runs, but did not factor in the decision. Dexter Price earned the win in relief. Nelson and Kronenfeld each totaled a pair of hits as Schaumburg finished with eight. Patron and Kronenfeld each tallied three RBIs. Each one of the 12 games for the Boomers (3-9) this season have been decided by three runs or less. The team has played four extra-inning contests. The pair of homers marked the first longballs since May 17.

The Boomers will enjoy a break on Thursday before returning home to open a nine-game homestand on Friday night. LHP Gunnar Kines (0-1, 7.27) starts for Schaumburg in the opener with the Washington Wild Things, slated for a 6:30 p.m. start. The evening will feature the first of three consecutive Memorial Day weekend fireworks shows. Ensure your place in the fun at Boomers Stadium this summer by calling (847) 461-FOWL (3695).
