Ninth Inning Run Lifts Boomers

NINTH INNING RUN PROPELS BOOMERS TO SERIES WIN

TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. — The Schaumburg Boomers, presented by Wintrust Community Banks, tallied a ninth inning run to pick up a ninth comeback win this year with a 2-1 decision over the Traverse City Beach Bums on the road Thursday night.

Shawn Payne led off the ninth with a double off the wall and came around to score the winning runs two batters later on a sacrifice fly from James Keller. Schaumburg trailed in the contest 1-0 before tying the game in the third. Paul Kronenfeld led off with a double and came around on a two-out single from Josh Gardiner.

Kagen Hopkins allowed just a single run in his second start, working five innings. Derek DeYoung struck out four in two innings with Evan Boyd earning the win. Boyd has gone 14.2 innings without allowing a run to open the season. Schaumburg managed just six hits in the game, but it was enough in the win. Mark Nelson tallied a pair of hits and owns an 11-game hitting streak. Schaumburg has won seven of the last 10 contests.

The Boomers (10-14) continue a six game roadswing at Windy City on Friday night at 7:05 p.m. RHP Josh Heddinger (1-2, 3.68) takes the ball in the opener against the East Division leaders.
