Boomers Walk Off In Extras

SCHAUMBURG, IL — The defending Frontier League champion Schaumburg Boomers presented by Wintrust Community Banks, tallied the first walk-off win of the year, besting the Traverse City Beach Bums 3-2 in 10 innings Sunday afternoon.

Starting 46 minutes late due to rain, the offense struggled at the start. Traverse City starter Adam Cornwell retired the first 10 batters of the contest. Josh Gardiner notched the first hit of the contest for the Boomers in the bottom of the fifth, doubling to left. Gardiner came around to score the first run on a single from Dylan Jones. Kenny Towns pushed the lead to 2-0 in the seventh with a solo homer, the first longball of the season for Schaumburg.

Traverse City was able to tie the game with two runs in the top of the ninth, spoiling a tremendous performance from Schaumburg starter Joe Hauser. Hauser tossed eight shutout innings and allowed only four hits, retiring 16 of 17 in the middle innings. Jones recorded a one-out single in the 10th and with two away Jack Parenty dropped down a bunt single. Sean Godfrey picked a good time for his first RBI of the year, roping a two-strike pitch into left with two outs to score Jones with the winning run.

Mitch Schulewitz picked up the win in relief, the first decision by a reliever this year. The offense finished with eight hits. Gardiner, Jones and Parenty all finished with two hits in the win

Following a day off on Monday, the Boomers (3-6) begin a three-game series in suburban St. Louis against the River City Rascals on Tuesday night at 6:35 p.m. RHP Kit Fowler (0-1, 2.70) will make the start for Schaumburg. Make the Boomers part of your plans this season by calling (847) 461-3695.
