Boomers Split Double Shutouts

AVON, OHIO —The Schaumburg Boomers, presented by Wintrust Community Banks, split a doubleheader with the Lake Erie Crushers, suffering an 8-0 shutout loss in the opener before bouncing back in the second contest with an extra-inning shutout.

LAKE ERIE 8, BOOMERS 0 – GAME ONE

Lake Erie used a quick strike offense in the opener. The Crushers grabbed the lead on back-to-back one-out swings in the bottom of the first. Aaron Hill singled and Emmanuel Marrero lined the next pitch over the wall in right. Sebastian Diaz connected on a solo homer on the first pitch of the third. The game really broke open behind four runs in the fourth. Schaumburg didn’t mount much offense against Lake Erie starter Alex Romero, who twirled five blank frames. The Boomers were able to load the bases in the fourth but came up empty. Schaumburg stranded eight on base.

Taylor Goshen threw a complete game but took the loss, allowing seven earned runs. Goshen walked one and struck out six in the second complete game of the season by the pitching staff. Quincy Nieporte tallied a pair of hits in the shutout loss, the second of the season.

BOOMERS 1, LAKE ERIE 0 – GAME TWO (Nine Innings)

The second game started over two hours following the conclusion of the opener. Neither team could muster any offense against the opposing pitchers. Schaumburg and Lake Erie entered the doubleheader first and third in the league in ERA respectively. The game headed to extras and the Boomers broke through for their only run of the day on a two-out double from Clint Hardy to knock home Jack Parenty, who was placed on second as the international tiebreaker runner.

Starting pitcher Erik Martinez matched his career high by striking out seven in 4.1 blank innings. Dylan Stutsman worked 1.1 innings and Jake Cousins grabbed the win by throwing 2.1 frames. Connor Eller slammed the door on his fifth save of the year by leaving the tying run at third. Lake Erie finished 0-for-13 with runners in scoring position. Hardy finished with two hits as the Boomers tallied four in the victory. Schaumburg did not record an error in either contest. Schaumburg owns three shutout wins this season.
