SCHAUMBURG, IL — The Schaumburg Boomers, presented by Wintrust Community Banks, dropped a 2-1 decision to the Joliet Slammers in the opener of a homestand on Tuesday night.

Orlando Rodriguez, signed before the game, dazzled in his professional debut for the Boomers. Rodriguez sat down 16 straight from the second through the seventh, although a runner did reach on a wild pitch following a strikeout. The rookie from St. Thomas University worked into the eighth and surrendered just one run on three hits with three walks and seven strikeouts. Schaumburg struggled against Joliet starter Daren Osby, who tossed six shutout frames. The Boomers nabbed a 1-0 lead in the seventh on a two-out RBI infield single from Jimmy Galusky, plating Connor Oliver, who walked to open the frame. The Slammers tallied the winning run in the top of the ninth against Jake Cousins with an RBI single from Ridge Hoopii-Haslam. Quincy Nieporte and Jack Parenty both notched a pair of hits as the Boomers finished with seven. Nieporte was activated from the injured list before the game.

The Boomers (17-17) continue the action-packed homestand on Wednesday night at 6:30 p.m. with LHP Gunnar Kines (1-2, 4.63) on the hill opposite RHP Scot Hoffman (3-1, 2.66). Visit boomersbaseball.com for tickets and information or call 847-461-3695.
