Boomers Falter Late in Extra-Inning Loss

SCHAUMBURG, IL — The Schaumburg Boomers, presented by Wintrust Community Banks, were unable to hold a four-run lead late, dropping the series finale with the Gateway Grizzlies 6-5 in 10 innings at Wintrust Field on Memorial Day.

Gian Martellini handed the Boomers a 2-0 lead with a two-run single in the second. Quincy Nieporte made the score 4-0 with a two-run single in the third. Gateway notched single runs in the seventh and eighth before a Luke Becker sacrifice fly pushed the lead back to three runs at 5-2 in the bottom of the eighth. Gateway scored three runs in the top of the ninth to force extras, taking advantage of a throwing error to tie the game. The visitors scored the international runner in the top of the 10th while the Boomers left the tying at third in the bottom of the frame.

Starter Aaron Rozek spun a third straight quality start by the pitching staff, striking out 10 over 6.2 innings to match a career high, allowing just one run. Stephen Chamblee suffered the loss in relief. Schaumburg finished with 10 hits, the first double-digit showing of the year. Alec Craig tallied two hits along with Martellini

The Boomers (2-2) hit the road for the first time tomorrow night, beginning a three-game series at Joliet. RHP Ryan Middendorf will make his professional debut. The team returns home next weekend. Visit boomersbaseball.com for tickets and information or call 847-461-3695.
