Big Fourth Drops Boomers in Opener

SCHAUMBURG, IL — The Evansville Otters scored six times in the top of the fourth to notch a 9-1 victory over the Schaumburg Boomers in the opener of the final home series of the regular season.

The Boomers took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first but managed little else offensively. Chase Dawson drew a walk to extend his on base streak to 31 games before scoring from first on a double from Quincy Nieporte. The Otters hit a pair of homers during the fourth inning and totaled eight hits in the frame. The inning was the lone frame that starter Kyle Arjona allowed runs, working seven innings in the loss. Evansville added three more in the eighth to account for the final.

Arjona allowed six run on 10 hits. Kristian Scott threw the eighth and Jake Joyce worked a perfect ninth. Braxton Davidson stayed hot by tallying three hits as the Boomers notched nine. Nieporte added a pair. The Evansville pitching staff struck out the Boomers 14 times in the contest.

The magic number for the Boomers (45-42) to win the division dipped to four despite the defeat. The series will continue tomorrow night at 6:00 p.m. with LHP Andrew Dean (4-9, 4.77) making the start against RHP Polo Portela (9-2, 3.22) on Fan Appreciation Night featuring postgame fireworks.
