Boomers Squeeze Past New York

POMONA, N.Y. — The 2021 Frontier League Champion Schaumburg Boomers managed only three hits, but the pitching did the rest in a 3-2 win over the New York Boulders in the first ever meeting between the two teams.

The Boomers led the entire game. Clint Hardy was hit by a two-strike pitch with two outs in the top of the first and Braxton Davidson followed with a walk. Matt Bottcher roped a single to center, scoring Hardy to give the Boomers a 1-0 lead. Davidson hit one a mile in the top of the third, launching his first homer nearly 470 feet to score also score Hardy and make the score 3-0. New York received a two-run homer in the fourth from David Vinsky but left the tying run on base in the final five innings.

Kyle Arjona threw five innings to earn his first win of the season, allowing just one earned run while striking out five. Juan Pichardo, Kristian Scott, Darrell Thompson and Jake Joyce kept the lead in tact for Thomas Nicoll, who picked up the save in his first outing of the season. The Boomers swiped four bases in the win. Hardy scored twice while Davidson reached twice.

The roadtrip will continue on Wednesday with RHP Jumpei Akanuma (0-0, 0.00) making his first appearance since 2019. New York will counter with opening night starter LHP Danny Wirchansky (0-0, 2.25).

Schaumburg returns home on May 20 to open the home schedule against Trois-Rivieres.
