Boomers Fall in Extras

FLORENCE, Ky. — The 2021 Frontier League Champion Schaumburg Boomers opened a three-game series on the road with a 2-1 loss to the Florence Y’Alls in 10 innings.

The Boomers were a strike away from sending the game to sudden death after Darrell Thompson recorded a pair of strikeouts in the bottom of the 10th but Bryant Flete found an opening on the right side of the infield to give the hosts the walkoff win. The contest was tight throughout with both teams scoring runs in the fourth. Williams Salas plated Blake Grant-Parks with the lone run for the Boomers, coming through with two outs. Florence evened the game with an unearned run in the bottom of the frame.

The runs were the only offense from both sides as the pitchers dictated the contest. Jumpei Akanuma started and worked 6.2 innings for the Boomers, allowing just an unearned run on five hits with two walks and three strikeouts. Tanner Shears kept the game even by leaving the go-ahead run in scoring position in the seventh and eighth. Jake Joyce worked the ninth and Thompson suffered the loss. The offense was just 1-for-12 with runners in scoring position. Braxton Davidson reached twice to extend his on-base streak to 23 games. Salas and Mike Hart also reached twice. The contest marked just the third extra-inning game of the year. Schaumburg and Florence have played five games decided by a total of seven runs.

The Boomers (34-31) continue to series on Wednesday night with RHP Blake Stelzer (5-3, 3.86) on the mound opposite RHP Bobby Brabrand (2-3, 5.40). The team returns home for another six-game homestand on Friday night, August 5. Tickets for the 2022 season are on sale now! Visit boomersbaseball.com.
