Boomers Blooped in 10

CRESTWOOD, Ill. — The 2021 Frontier League Champion Schaumburg Boomers tied the game with two outs in the top of the ninth inning but suffered a 5-4 loss in 10 innings to the Windy City ThunderBolts on the road Saturday night.

Dan Robinson blooped a hit over first base in the 10th off Kristian Scott, the fourth pitcher of the game, to win the contest. Schaumburg trailed for nearly the entire contest but tied the game in the ninth. Braxton Davidson coaxed a two-out walk and pinch runner William Salas was able to score on a pair of errors.

The Boomers were able to jump ahead in the first inning as the first three batters of the contest singled. Blake Berry lifted a sacrifice fly to score Clint Hardy with the game’s first run. Jake Boone hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the inning as the second batter of the game for Windy City and added a two-run single in the second. Hardy smacked a two-run homer to left in the fourth to bring the Boomers within a run.

Schaumburg had plenty of chances in the game, totaling nine hits to go with nine walks, but left 15 on base. Hardy posted two hits, scored twice and reached four times. Mike Hart and Chase Dawson also tallied two hits as the top three in the lineup combined to reach 10 times and collect six hits. Davidson extended his on-base streak to 33 in the contest, the second longest in franchise history. Berry has now reached base in 15 consecutive contests.

Jumpei Akanuma allowed four early runs but settled down to work five and strike out seven in a no-decision. The bullpen allowed a hit to start the sixth but then nothing until the 10th as the combination of Tanner Shears, Thomas Nicoll and Scott combined to strike out 13. The pitching staff has posted five consecutive games with 10+ strikeouts and owns 95 over the last eight contests. Schaumburg has dropped the last three extra-inning games this year.

The Boomers (41-34) conclude the first series of the roadtrip with a doubleheader on Sunday afternoon at 2:05 p.m. RHP Miguel Reyes (0-1, 0.00) and LHP Kobey Schlotman (2-1, 6.89) will start both ends of the twinbill.
