Ottawa Homers to Middle Game Win

OTTAWA, Ontario — The Ottawa Titans homered three times, responding to every Schaumburg momentum shift, picking up a 9-4 win the middle game of the series in Canada on Wednesday.

The Boomers jumped ahead in the first inning. Gaige Howard led off the game with a single to extend his on-base streak to 16 games. Chase Dawson singled with one away to extend his hitting streak to 12 games and move Howard to third. Blake Berry drove home the first run with a fielder’s choice, knocking in his third of the series. Ottawa scored single runs in the second and third to open a 2-1 advantage.

Berry plated Dawson with an RBI single in the fourth and Howard logged his league best eighth double to score a run in the fifth as the Boomers led 3-2. The Titans responded by scoring twice without a hit in the fifth, taking advantage of three walks, a hit batter and a wild pitch. Three more runs came across in the sixth with a pair coming on the second homer of the game from Jason Dicochea. Quentin Selma singled home a run in the top of the eighth before a two-run homer from Jake Gitter in the bottom of the inning accounted for the final.

Logan Schmitt worked four innings in his season debut and allowed two runs on six hits with a walk and four strikeouts. Ben Strahm suffered the loss in relief. Matt Craven tossed three innings in his pro debut, the longest relief outing of the season by a Schaumburg hurler. The Boomers finished with 10 hits in the defeat. Dawson was 4-for-4 with a double and two runs scored. Howard finished 3-for-5 with a run and an RBI. Berry drove home a pair of runs.

The Boomers (9-7) continue the six-game roadtrip to Canada with the series finale against the Titans at 10:00am CST on Thursday. RHP Miguel Reyes (2-0, 2.12) makes the start for Schaumburg. The home schedule for 2023 is just underway and the Boomers will return to Wintrust Field on June 6. Tickets are available by visiting boomersbaseball.com or calling 847-461-3695.
