Weekend Preview - Championship Rematch

When the winning run crossed the plate in a hard-fought 2022 Frontier League Championship series, the Schaumburg Boomers were left wanting. With the 2023 season now well underway and the Boomers once again in contention, they will get their one series against last season’s champs. The Boomers will welcome the Quebec Capitales to Wintrust Field this weekend in a rematch of the 2022 FLCS.

Both teams have the same manager this year with the Boomers led by Jamie Bennett, who has been the only skipper in team history. Bennett owns over 500 wins in his 11 years at the helm and ranks seventh in league history. Pat Scalabrini manages Quebec and has been in charge since 2010, piling up nearly 700 victories.

Quebec recently re-signed the MVP of the FLCS, Ruben Castro, who posted walk-offs in game three and four to hand the Boomers their first ever postseason series defeat after winning 11 straight. The Capitales also feature a former Boomer in RHP Stephen Chamblee.

Pitching has paced the Boomers in 2023 as the team recently threw the first no-hitter in franchise history at Wintrust Field on June 8 when Jackson Hickert (Seven Innings), Antonio Frias (One Inning) and Dylan Stutsman (One Inning) combined in a 2-0 win. The pitching staff ranks third in the league in ERA entering the weekend and has posted 14 quality starts to begin the campaign. Starters have thrown six innings or more in more than half of the contests to begin the year. The Boomers will send Aaron Glickstein, Miguel Reyes and Luis Perez to the mound this weekend. All three were on the roster last season.

Chase Dawson anchors the offense as the Northwest Indiana native continues to re-write the teams record books, taking over franchise leads for runs scored, total bases and RBIs already this year while hitting over .350. Gaige Howard has reached base in every game this season. The team has also been exciting on the basepaths with 43 steals, already a third of the way to the franchise mark.

Besides the action on the field, the fun will be rampant off it as well at Wintrust Field this weekend. Friday night features postgame fireworks and is also Princess Night. More fireworks light up the sky on Saturday which is also Baseball to End ALZ Night. The series concludes on Father’s Day with pregame catch on the field, postgame autographs, a Boomers baseball cap giveaway.
