Late Heroics Turn Tables in Washington

WASHINGTON, Pa. — Blake Berry tripled home a pair of runs with two outs in the top of the ninth inning as the Schaumburg Boomers scored three runs to upend the Washington Wild Things 6-4 in the opener of a weekend series in Pennsylvania.

Washington struck first with a run in the opening frame against Shumpei Yoshikawa. Travis Holt tied the game with a sacrifice fly to score Blake Grant-Parks in the second. Andrew Czech homered to open the fourth but a fielder’s choice and an error led to the Boomers taking a 3-2 lead in the sixth. The lead held until Washington scored twice on a two-out double from Tristan Peterson in the bottom of the eighth.

The ninth opened with two outs before Kyle Fitzgerald singled, Brett Milazzo walked and Chase Dawson reached on an error to load the bases. A wild pitch brought home the tying run before Berry’s triple.

Jake Joyce struck out the side in the ninth to earn his fourth save. Cristian Lopez picked up the win in relief after Yoshikawa tossed a season high seven innings, allowing just two runs with eight strikeouts. Berry finished with four hits in the win.

The Boomers continue the series with Washington tomorrow night with another 6:05pm CST contest. The team will return home for the Fourth of July Festivities beginning on July 3 against Joliet. Tickets are available by visiting boomersbaseball.com or calling 847-461-3695.
