Boomers Drop Weather Shortened Contest

PATERSON, NJ — The Schaumburg Boomers opened play after the All-Star break by dropping a 6-3 weather shortened decision at the hands of the leaders of the East Division, the New Jersey Jackals, on the road Friday night.

New Jersey took the lead on the first pitch of the game as Martin Figueroa homered over the wall in right. The Jackals would build a 5-0 lead with another run in the first and three in the third including a solo homer from James Nelson. The Boomers battled within 5-2 against former big leaguer Vin Mazzaro with a pair of runs in the fourth.

Blake Berry singled home Brett Milazzo with a third consecutive single and another run crossed on an error. Nelson homered again in the bottom of the fourth to push the lead to 6-2, but again the Boomers pulled within three. Chase Dawson tallied an RBI double into the right field corner in the fifth. Mother nature stepped in prior to the bottom of the sixth as lightning in the area sent the game into a delay ahead of thunderstorms which followed.

Shumpei Yoshikawa tossed a complete game, his second of the year, but took the loss, allowing six runs in five innings. Schaumburg finished with seven hits, two of which came from Dawson. The team also swiped three bases.

The Boomers (31-20) continue the first post All-Star break series at New Jersey on Saturday night at 6:05pm. The team returns home on July 21.
