Boomers Cruise Past Mississippi

SCHAUMBURG, Ill. — The Schaumburg Boomers scored in six different innings and cruised to an 18-4 victory over the Mississippi Mud Monsters before another full house at Wintrust Field (7,920) on Saturday night.

Schaumburg wasted no time in taking the lead. After Cole Cook sat down Mississippi in order in the top of the first, Alec Craig drew a walk and came around to score on a double from the very next batter, Cole Smith in the bottom of the inning. Craig would go on to score four more runs and equal the franchise mark by crossing the plate five times. The mark has been achieved three times previously, most recently by David Harris in 2017. The lead grew to 4-0 behind three runs in the second. Craig drove home a run with a single, Smith drew a bases loaded walk and Anthony Calarco knocked home a run with a groundout. Banks Tolley made the score 6-0 with a two-run single in the fourth. The game really opened up in the sixth when brothers Anthony and Alex Calarco both slugged three-runs homers. Tolley added a three-run blast of his own in the seventh. The scoring was completed behind three runs in the eighth, two of which were doubled home by Anthony Calarco.

The run support was plenty four Cook, who threw seven innings and allowed just an unearned run. Cook retired the first seven batters of the game and 16 of the first 17. Cook finished with seven strikeouts and allowed just five hits, three of which never left the infield, to earn his seventh win of the season. Tanner Shears and Jack Snyder finished out the win. Everyone was involved offensively for the Boomers, who finished with 17 hits while drawing 10 walks. Reigning league MVP Anthony Calarco drove home six while Tolley plated five. Craig was not retired in the contest, finishing with four hits and two walks from the leadoff slot.

The Boomers (42-35) finish out the loaded weekend with the series finale on Sunday afternoon at 1:00pm on Back to School Day. The first 1,500 fans will receive a Boomers backpack courtesy of Judson University. RHP Cole Zaffiro (0-3, 5.26) is scheduled to make the start.
