Boomers Bolster Roster At Deadline
SCHAUMBURG, Ill. — The Schaumburg Boomers were active at the Frontier League’s transaction deadline on Monday, fortifying the roster for the stretch run to the playoffs as the team closes in on a division title and a fifth postseason appearance in six years.
The Boomers brought back veteran left-handed pitcher Darrell Thompson. Thompson spent four seasons with the Boomers, most recently in 2022, before his contract was purchased by the Milwaukee Brewers. The Virginia native reached Triple-A Nashville with Milwaukee and has spent the last two seasons pitching in Mexico for Piratas de Campeche, where he teams with several former MLB players. Thompson finished 5-4 for Campeche this season with a 3.92 ERA in 44 outings, striking out 53 in 43.2 innings. As a member of the Boomers from 2018-22, the 32-year-old is the franchise’s all-time leader in strikeouts per nine innings at 13.59 with 230 strikeouts in 152.1 innings of work. Thompson owns the fourth lowest career ERA in franchise history at 2.66. The 10th year professional is third all-time in saves and games finished with sitting fourth in career appearances with 138, the most ever by a left-hander. Thompson will open on the 7-day injured list.
Schaumburg also made a trade with Tri-City for utility player Kai Moody. Moody hit .257 for the ValleyCats with eight homers, 44 RBIs, 44 walks and 19 stolen bases this season in 65 games. A veteran of three Frontier League seasons, Moody has played multiple positions in both the infield and outfield. The right-handed hitter suited up for Ottawa in 2022 and 2023 and spent 2025 in the Pioneer League, batting .336. Moody was a college teammate of former Schaumburg player Andrew Sojka at Cal State Northridge. The move for Moody completes a previous trade which sent RHP Wyatt Cameron to Tri-City earlier this year and will include a player to be named later from Schaumburg.
Additional moves at the deadline included placing INF Will Prater on the 7-day injured list, moving C Logan Gregorio from the 7-day to the 14-day injured list, releasing RHP Tanner Shears and activating RHP Kade Linn from the 7-day injured list. The active roster sits at 24 entering the final three weeks of the season.
There are just 18 games remaining in the regular season, 11 of which will be played at Wintrust Field where the Boomers are 27-13 this season. The Boomers (48-36) begin a key split series with Windy City on Tuesday night to conclude a seven-game roadtrip. Schaumburg is five games ahead of Windy City in the West Division race. RHP Derek Salata (5-5, 4.47) is slated to start the opener tonight at 6:35 pm. The team returns home on August 19 for a Business Day Game presented by All About Personnel in the first of a brief two-game stint at Wintrust Field. The Boomers are in the midst of a stretch which features 19-of-24 on the road. Don’t miss out on the fun before it’s too late. Feel the Boom this summer!
