Windy City Walks Off to Win Opener
CRESTWOOD, Ill. — The Schaumburg Boomers concluded a seven-game roadtrip with a 5-4 loss to the Windy City ThunderBolts in 10 innings on Tuesday night.
The Boomers recorded consistent opportunities but did not score until the top of the third. Alec Craig was hit by a pitch to start the inning and scored from second on a bloop opposite field single from Kellum Clark. Windy City responded in similar fashion, utilizing bloop singles in the third and fourth to open a 2-1 edge. The Boomers were able to even the game in the sixth. Cole Turney led off with a double and moved to third on a single from Alex Calarco. Cole Smith lifted a sacrifice fly to score Turney and make the score 2-2. The ThunderBolts took the lead again in the bottom of the seventh on a sacrifice fly to make the score 3-2. Clark came through once more with two outs, tying the game with a single to score Cole Smith in the bottom of the ninth with the Boomers down to their final strike. Clark scored the go-ahead run in the 10th on a sacrifice fly from Chase Dawson but a double play allowed just the one run to score. Windy City drew three walks in the bottom of the inning and won the game on a single to right from Carlos Pena.
Derek Salata allowed just two runs in six innings of work and did not factor in the decision. Salata allowed four hits while walking two and striking out three. Aaron Glickstein worked two innings with Caleb Riedel tossing the ninth. Holland Townes suffered the loss. Schaumburg was just 4-for-17 with runners in scoring position and left 11 on base. The Boomers put runners on in every inning with the exception of the seventh. Schaumburg notched 10 hits in the game with Clark, Dawson and Turney all posting a pair. The Boomers have lost twice in extras at Windy City this season. The team finished 5-2 on the trip.
The Boomers (48-37) return home tomorrow as the home portion of the series begins with a quick turnaround on a Business Day Game at 12:00pm presented by All About Personnel in the first of a brief two-game stint for the team at Wintrust Field. RHP Ross Thompson (9-3, 4.44) is slated to start against RHP Tyler Wehrle (4-3, 3.57). The Boomers are in the midst of a stretch which features 19-of-24 on the road.
