Boomers Swept by Windy City

SCHAUMBURG, Ill. — The Schaumburg Boomers were swept by the Windy City ThunderBolts after dropping a 3-1 decision at Wintrust Field on Thursday night, shrinking the distance between the two clubs atop the Frontier League’s West Division standings to just two games with 15 contests to play in the season.

Kyle Fitzgerald put the Boomers ahead in the bottom of the second inning with a two-out solo homer. Windy City starter Isaac Milburn sat down 11 consecutive batters following the Fitzgerald homer. The ThunderBolts responded with two outs in the fourth on a two-run single from Daryl Ruiz and added another run in the fifth to go up 3-1. The Boomers did not place multiple runners on base until the seventh but a double play erased the threat. Schaumburg put the tying runs on again in the eighth and ninth but were unable to score.

Cole Cook worked seven innings and allowed three runs on nine hits but took the loss. Jack Snyder spun a scoreless eighth and Caleb Riedel struck out the side in the ninth. Schaumburg was limited to just five hits in the game for a second straight contest. Alec Craig logged two of the hits. The Boomers managed just 20 hits and 12 walks in the three games. The two teams split the 12 meetings this season.

The Boomers (48-39) hit the road again this weekend for three games with the Lake Erie Crushers beginning on Friday night at 6:00pm. RHP Cole Zaffiro (0-3, 4.07) is slated to start the opener for the Boomers. The Boomers are in the midst of a stretch which features 19-of-24 on the road. The team will return home to begin the final nine home dates of the year on August 25 against Evansville for Bark in the Park presented by Golf Rose Animal Hospital.
