Boomers Rebound at Lake Erie

AVON, Ohio — The Schaumburg Boomers rebounded after being swept to start the week, opening a three-game road series at Lake Erie with a 5-2 victory.

After playing from behind for much of the previous series with Windy City, the Boomers were able to jump ahead early. Alec Craig led off the game with a walk and stole second before Kellum Clark logged a two-out double to put Schaumburg in front. Two more runs scored in the second on an infield hit from Chase Dawson with an error that enabled the second run to come across. Clark recorded his second double of the game in the fifth, driving home Anthony Calarco to make the score 4-0. Lake Erie cut the margin in half with a two-out two-run homer from Joe Redfield in the fifth. The homer brought an end to a 21.2 inning scoreless streak for Schaumburg starter Cole Zaffiro. Christian Fedko coaxed a bases loaded walk in the seventh to account for the final.

Zaffiro picked up his first professional win, working six innings and striking out seven. Kyle Moore completed the victory by striking out four in three scoreless to collect his second save of the season. The pitching staff fanned 11 in the win. Clark led a 10-hit parade with four including two doubles.

The Boomers (49-39) will continue the weekend series with another 6:05pm game on Saturday night. All-Star RHP Buddie Pondel (9-2, 3.79) is the scheduled starter for the middle game of the series. The Boomers are in the midst of a stretch which features 19-of-24 on the road. The team will return home to begin the final nine home dates of the year on August 25 against Evansville for Bark in the Park presented by Golf Rose Animal Hospital.
